Budget Redemptions (Under 20,000 Points)
Short domestic routes (LAX–SFO, JFK–BOS, ORD–MDW) start at 6,000 miles one-way in economy. At 1.4¢/mile valuation, that's $84 in value for a sub-$150 ticket. Transfers from Chase at 1:1.
Category 1–2 Hyatt properties (Holiday Inn Express-tier in the Hyatt network) offer clean, reliable stays for minimal points. Great use of leftover points after a big redemption.
Mid-Range Redemptions (20,000–60,000 Points)
Transfers 1:1, instantly. 15,000–20,000 points for nights that cost $300–$600 in cash. Consistently 2–3¢ per point. The single best straightforward redemption in the game for most people.
Every month, Flying Blue publishes "Promo Rewards" with 25–50% off select routes. Transfers from Chase, Amex, and Capital One. Catching a good promo on a transatlantic route can deliver exceptional value. Check monthly.
American Airlines offers domestic business class (lie-flat on some routes) for 25,000 miles one-way. Cross-country in a premium seat for 25k miles is genuinely excellent value when the space is available.
Luxury Redemptions (60,000+ Points)
The pinnacle of points redemptions. Lufthansa First Class to Europe in cash runs $10,000–$20,000. At 109k Aeroplan points (transferable from Chase, Amex, Capital One), you're getting 9–18¢ per point. Requires finding saver award space, which is limited but available to patient planners.
Cash rates for overwater bungalows run $1,500–$3,000/night. At 45,000 Hyatt points/night (transferred from Chase at 1:1), a 5-night stay uses 225,000 points vs. $7,500–$15,000 in cash. One of the most aspirational redemptions in the hobby.
ANA's The Room business class product to Japan is world-class. 60,000 Virgin Atlantic points round-trip (transfer from Chase, Amex, or Capital One). Cash value: $5,000–$8,000. One of the most loved sweet spots in the points community.
The Rules of Great Redemptions
- Never transfer speculatively. Always confirm award space exists before transferring points. Space disappears.
- Flexibility dramatically expands options. Off-peak dates, mid-week travel, and 60–90 day advance booking unlock award space that weekend warriors miss.
- Cash price matters as much as points price. A 50,000-point redemption at a $200/night hotel (0.4¢/pt) is worse than a 30,000-point redemption at a $500/night hotel (1.7¢/pt).
- Compare to the best cash price, not the rack rate. Use the lowest available cash price when calculating CPP — that's the real comparison.
